prisoner's tub

In the town of Inveraray, Scotland, at the local prison, all prisoners were ordered to bathe in the bathtub upon arrival before being issued their prison clothing.

One such prisoner, Peter Campbell who was jailed for 10 days in 1840 was described as 'very dirty and naked and swarming with vermin.

In July 2004, I had the delight of visiting the Inveraray Jail which is now a living history museum full of wax prisoners and a few live actors too. I was very exciting to find, a bathtub in both the old and new jail. The first one from the old jail is the one I am sitting in. What is curious is it is made of wood. In the new Jail, a lovely wax prisoner welcomed us to the bathing room (with real water in the tub!). My only complaint: the store at the end of the tour did not sell a postcard of the bathing prisoner!
